SITUATION
North West tip of Tasmania. 16 kilometres North Coast. 18 Kilometres West Coast.
EMPLOYMENT
120 employees are involved in dairy, beef and sheep enterprises.
BEEF CATTLE
200 Hereford remain from a bloodline commencing 1873, making this the oldest continuous Hereford bloodline in Australia. 2,000 Angus breeders and weaners provide beef for the export and domestic markets.
10,000 Friesian bulls are grazed in a Techno Beef grazing system to supply 5,000 annually for export to the US as hamburger beef.
SHEEP
The composite breed herd has been reduced to 4,000 breeders for a prime lamb trade. Shearing is contracted in January in a 13 stand raised board shed.
DAIRYING
10 Rotary dairies and 1 Herringbone dairy are operated by sharefarmers & managers. The largest dairy, an 80
bail platform, milking an average of 650 cows per hour. 2,300 this season.
EARTHWORMS Since the 1980's, the transplanting of earthworms to new pastures has aided improved pasture production.
WIND FARM
Roaring 40’s have 37 generators producing 1.75Mw on Flat Top Bluff and 25 generators producing 3Mw at Studland Bay.
RESEARCH We conduct an ongoing programme which is currently directed at increasing pasture production and efficiency.
FORESTRY Over 500 hectares of forest enrichment and shelter planting plus large areas of native vegetation reserves
have been fenced off.
DEVELOPMENT Over 4800 hectares was developed into pasture between 1994 & 1998.
EARLY HISTORY
VD.L. Co. began in 1825 from a Royal Charter from King George IV Edward Curr, the first manager arrived August 1826 at Stanley. Mason's and Cookhouse cottages plus the Jail are the oldest buildings on Woolnorth, built early 1830's.

WILDLIFE The last 4 Tasmanian Tigers captured at Woolnorth were sent to the Beaumauris Zoo, Queens Domain, Hobart.
BIRDS Large areas of excellent habitat exist on the property. Over 100 species have been identified. Often migratory
birds winter on Woolnorth.
CO. DETAILS Woolnorth is part of The VD.L. Company, which is the only company (worldwide) operating under a Royal
Charter, dating back to 1825, on its original land.
The major shareholder is a New Zealand public company TASMAN FARMS LIMITED, based in Timaru.
Most of the VD.L Co. maps, documents and records are being cared for in the archives at Hobart. VD.L Co.
maps etc can be found in many museums around the state.
